Banking could play an essential role in driving action on inequality and addressing the climate and nature emergency.

In conversation with Martin Parker (Professor of Organisation Studies at the University of Bristol Business School), Mark will explore how Triodos Bank has developed a powerful model that directs millions of pounds of finance into low carbon businesses, social projects, nature-restoration and more. He will talk about what it is like to lead the UK’s top-rated ethical bank based in Bristol and after more than a year in the role, he will consider what his legacy might be.
The event is free to attend and open to all who are interested in the future of business, finance and economic change including students, alumni, staff, practitioners and the public.

Mark Clayton is chief executive officer of Triodos Bank UK, a wholly owned subsidiary of Triodos Bank N.V., the global pioneer in sustainable banking. Â

In his role, Mark leads the bank’s mission to use money as a force for positive environmental, social and cultural change. Appointed as CEO in May 2025, he joined Triodos as chief operating officer in 2024.Â
Mark brings more than 30 years’ experience in the banking sector, combining deep operational expertise with a strong belief in the role finance can play in shaping a better future. Before joining Triodos, he spent over two decades at HSBC in a number of strategic and customer-facing positions, including leading the growth of its Retail Premier and international business. Mark then moved away from mainstream banking to focus on roles specifically in values-based organisations, taking up the role of chief operating officer at Unity Trust Bank, a fellow GABV member.Â
He is passionate about the role that sustainable banking can play in society, and how the financial sector should serve people and the planet, not just financial returns. He believes that how money is used has a profound impact on the world around us, and that banks have a responsibility to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy. He has a regular column in the Metro newspaper on how to green your money.Â
He lives near Birmingham with his wife and two teenage children and is passionate about gardening and the outdoors.Â
